Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a degenerative condition of the gums. It is caused by bacteria in plaque that inflame and infect your gum tissues, eventually causing them to pull away from the teeth and contributing to tooth loss, gum recession and bone loss. Some common symptoms of periodontal disease include:
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Easy bleeding of the gums
- Loose teeth
- Receding gums
- Pain or bleeding when chewing
- Bad breath
- Pus between the teeth
- Changes in your bite or in the fit of oral appliances
Our experienced dentists will provide a variety of treatments to help you manage and fight the gum disease in your mouth. When you visit our office, we will thoroughly examine your mouth to determine how severe your gum disease is and create an individualized treatment plan to meet your needs. This treatment plan may include one or more of the following:
- Improved at-home care
- Deep dental cleanings (prophylaxis)
- Scaling and root planing
- Antibiotic treatment
- Gum surgery
We encourage you to visit our office regularly so that our dentists can diagnose and begin treatment for periodontal disease when it is in the early stages of development and less severe. Treatment for the milder form of gum disease, known as gingivitis, can often successfully treat and eradicate the condition. The more severe form of periodontal disease, known as periodontitis, cannot be completely cured and can only be managed and brought under control.
